Moderation setup
Moderation checks new messages in the channels you choose against the rules you turn on, and opens a case for a moderator when one breaks a rule. A person decides every case: BotStacked never acts on its own, and it never keeps what a member wrote.
Contents
What it checks#
- Message flood: a member sends a set number of messages within a few seconds.
- Repeated message: the same message of 8 or more characters, again and again.
- Discord invite links.
- Mention spam: a message with many mentions, or one that pings @everyone or @here.
- Blocked domains: a link to a domain on your list, or to one of its subdomains.
- Banned phrases: words or phrases on your list.
Each rule has its own switch and numbers. You choose up to 25 channels to check. Members, roles and channels you exempt are never flagged, and an exempt channel wins over a checked one.
Shadow and Assist#
- Shadow is where every server starts. A case opens for each message that breaks a rule, and moderators confirm or dismiss it. Nothing is done to any message or member. If you choose an alert channel, BotStacked can still post there.
- Assist is the same, and from a confirmed case a moderator can delete the message or time the member out for 10 minutes, 1 hour, 24 hours or 7 days, up to the length the server chose.
Each action is a moderator's own request, and BotStacked checks their Discord permissions again when it runs: Manage Messages, and Timeout Members for a timeout. There is no warn, kick, ban or automatic action.
Switch it on#
- Open your server in the dashboard, choose Moderation, then Switch on Moderation. You need Manage Server, and BotStacked has to be online in the server.
- Choose the channels to check and a set of rules. You can change every number later in Policy.
- Copy the notice below and post it where your members will see it, then confirm that you will.
- Switch on. It starts in Shadow, so you can watch the cases for a while before you let moderators act on them.
BotStacked needs View Channel and Read Message History in the checked channels, Manage Messages to delete, and Timeout Members and a role above the member's to time them out. Servers that added BotStacked earlier may need to grant them.
What it keeps#
A case keeps the IDs of the message, the channel and the member, the rule or the AI's label that matched (for example harassment or spam), its severity, and the notes and decisions moderators add. Where a blocked domain or phrase matched, the case names that entry of your own list. Cases are kept for 7, 30 or 90 days, as you choose, and then deleted.
Your policy's saved versions, which list exempt members, and the record of AI consent are kept until you delete the server's moderation data. The server owner or an administrator can delete one member's data or all of the server's. Records of who reviewed a case (case IDs, never message text) are kept with the security logs.
What it never keeps#
The text of a message, an attachment, what was sent to an AI provider, or what it said back. BotStacked reads a message to check it and keeps only what the case needs to be reviewed.
AI checks#
AI checks are optional, and BotStacked has not switched them on yet: until it does, local rules do all the checking and nothing is sent to an AI provider. Once they are on, they stay off until the server owner or a Discord administrator allows them for the server, and that consent can be withdrawn at any time. This is how they will work:
- A first safety check sends the text of messages in the checked channels to OpenAI. For a message that check or a rule flags, a second review sends the text, up to three earlier messages from the same channel and the rules that matter to Groq. The earlier messages stay in memory for about five minutes. No Discord IDs or attachments are sent.
- The providers may keep what they receive for a short time under their own policies. The dashboard shows what each one says.
- The AI only suggests. A moderator decides, and no AI result deletes a message or times a member out.
- BotStacked sets the same daily allowance of AI checks for every server. When it is used up, or a provider is down, the AI checks pause and the rules keep running.
Alerts#
Choose an alert channel in Policy and BotStacked posts there when a new case opens, when more than 10 cases are waiting, when AI checks pause, and when it loses a permission it needs. It posts at most one message a minute and folds later events into the next one. A message names the channel and the rule, with a link to the case, and never includes what a member wrote. If BotStacked cannot post, moderation carries on.
Who can do what#
- The owner, administrators and members with Manage Server switch Moderation on and change its policy.
- Members with Manage Messages open Moderation in the dashboard to review cases. They cannot change the policy, and they do not need Manage Server.
- Only the server owner or an administrator can allow AI checks or delete the server's moderation data.
Tell your members#
Members should know their messages are checked. Post this where they will see it, for example in your rules channel, and change the number of days to the one you chose:
This server uses BotStacked Moderation. BotStacked checks new messages in some channels against rules the server's moderators chose, such as message floods, repeated messages, invite links and blocked links or words. It does not store what you write. When a message breaks a rule, BotStacked keeps a case with the message's ID, the channel, your Discord user ID and the rule that matched, for a number of days the server chooses (7, 30 or 90), so a moderator can review it. A moderator decides what happens. BotStacked does not act on its own. Ask a moderator if you have questions.
If you allow AI checks, add: AI checks are on in this server: the text of messages in the checked channels is also sent to AI providers (OpenAI and Groq) to look for harmful content. The providers may keep what they receive for a short time under their own policies. BotStacked does not store it.
